Weald Rise Primary

Online Safety

Introduction

At Weald Rise Primary School, safeguarding children is always our highest priority, and this includes helping them stay safe in the ever‑growing online world. Children today use the internet for learning, creativity, communication, and play. While technology offers many exciting opportunities, it also brings risks that children may not yet fully understand.

We are committed to teaching pupils how to use the internet responsibly and confidently. Working together with parents and carers, we aim to create a safe digital environment—both in school and at home—where children can explore, learn, and enjoy technology securely.

Key Points for Internet Safety

1. What We Teach at School

Children learn essential online safety skills throughout the curriculum—including Computing, PSHE, and through regular themed assemblies and special events such as Safer Internet Day. Topics we teach include:

  • Understanding what personal information is and why it must be protected
  • Recognising trustworthy websites, safe apps, and secure passwords
  • Being kind and respectful online
  • Knowing what to do if they see something that worries or upsets them
  • Understanding the importance of asking permission before sharing photos
  • Recognising online bullying and how to report it

Our staff receive regular training so they can support pupils effectively and stay updated on emerging online trends and risks.

2. How We Keep Children Safe in School

We use a range of systems and safeguards to protect children while using school devices and networks:

  • Filtered internet access to block harmful or inappropriate content
  • Monitored devices and learning platforms
  • Strict login and password policies
  • Appropriate-use agreements for pupils and staff
  • Regular reviews of online safety procedures

These measures ensure that children can explore the internet safely within a secure learning environment.

3. Advice for Parents and Carers

Parents play a vital role in helping children develop healthy and safe online habits. We encourage families to:

  • Set up parental controls and safe search filters on home devices
  • Monitor screen time and online activities regularly
  • Talk openly about what children do online and encourage them to share any worries
  • Check age ratings (PEGI) for games, apps, and films
  • Keep devices in shared family spaces, especially for younger children
  • Teach children not to share personal information or speak with strangers online

If you're unsure how to set up controls or need help choosing safe apps, please speak to us—we’re happy to support you.

4. Staying Safe on Apps, Games & Social Media

Many online platforms have age limits (such as 13+), which help protect younger children from inappropriate content and interactions. We remind families that younger children should not have access to accounts designed for older users.

To help children stay safe:

  • Consider using child-friendly apps designed for primary-age pupils
  • Avoid apps with open chat functions
  • Review privacy settings regularly
  • Talk to your child about what they enjoy doing online

If something feels unsuitable or unsafe, encourage children to stop and tell an adult.

5. What Children Should Do If They Are Worried

We teach all pupils a simple approach for dealing with anything online that makes them feel uncomfortable, unsure, scared, or confused:

STOP – CLOSE THE DEVICE – TELL AN ADULT

Children should:

  • Tell a trusted adult straight away
  • Avoid deleting messages or evidence
  • Never try to deal with the problem alone

We reassure children that they will not be in trouble for reporting concerns.
